April 2010: His old work equipment... stolen. Moving in with his parents. Waiting tables.
This is where Sean Becker was in early 2010. Not exactly what a 27-year-old’s dreams are made of, especially one as independent as Sean. His only option was to continue to search for the next opportunity... something bigger, something better.
We’ve all been through the hamster wheel of updating our resume and sending it out for people to ignore or filter into an inbox folder, never to be seen again. And just like the everyone else, Sean did exactly that. The only two options that came from his efforts were an interview with a roofer and an interview with a bible salesman.
After taking into account that his parents had just purchased a new roof for more than the cost of a few new bibles, he decided roofing was the better choice for him.
He hit the ground running with his new position as a Roof Salesman, selling multiple roofs in a short time. It was an passion that would continue to grow throughout the years.
As much as he loved working outside, inspecting roofs, and truly helping people, he still needed to make ends meet. It had been six months and he was selling roofs, but closing the projects and getting paid just wasn’t happening!
After earning around $5k for the first six months of his efforts, he pressed on with the help of a new roofing contractor. Training that we have now wasn’t even an option at that time in the industry. It took Sean time, research, and staring at YouTube tutorials every evening to learn. He also put in countless hours of ride alongs with his boss to absorb as much as possible. Then things began to look up. By his 7th month in the roofing business, he began closing roof sales and achieving what he had worked so hard for.
In April of 2011, a year after starting his journey in roofing, Sean met a couple who were in need of a new roof. This became a turning point in his business. He performed a roof inspection for the couple and consequently ended up selling them a new roof. After that, he proceeded to sell 12 more roofs on the same street through personal referrals of his new customers. He then went on to sell another 12 more on the next street over, all from referrals! He knew he was on the right track.
By 2012, Sean bought a home with his beautiful fiancee. In 2013, they were married in Europe and spent their honeymoon traveling. Life looked a little different for the Beckers. Of course, they had more financial freedom as a result of Sean’s success in the industry, but the new career path in roofing had also offered Sean more freedom all around.
He now set his own hours, scheduling around things he had to accomplish around the schedules of his roofing customers and balancing family time. By doing this, he was able to be more efficient with his time.
In April of 2015, Sean opened up his first roofing business with a partner, SBMG Contracting. For three years, Sean poured all he had into the success of the company. His expanding list of customers trusted him with the roof over their heads and were constantly referring him to new clients. In 2018, Sean and his business partner decided to close down SBMG Contracting in order to open their own individual companies and support their growing families.
Life began to move faster for Sean, and it only continues to be more fulfilling due to his persistence, his dedication, and his desire to to always do “a little bit more” everyday. It was a process to get to this point in his career and life, and it was worth it.
“If you like it, stick with it. Work with patience and speed,” is Sean’s advice to those interested in the roofing business.
