Fort Worth Roof Replacement Cost: What Homeowners Actually Pay in 2026

Most people asking about a Fort Worth roof replacement want one number. Here is why that number moves. A homeowner in west Fort Worth called us out last year for what he thought was a simple hail claim. From the driveway his roof looked tired but fine. Nothing was obviously wrong.

Then we started the tear-off. The decking underneath had been re-roofed so many times the plywood was chewed up, and in a few spots it was flexing under our guys’ boots. You could stand on the ridge and see daylight through the gaps between boards.

That roof needed a full redeck before a single shingle went down. It changed his number by thousands. Because we documented it properly, his insurance paid for it.

That is the honest answer to what a roof replacement cost in Fort Worth looks like: the price on the estimate is real, but what is under your shingles decides where you land in the range.

Fort Worth roof replacement cost: the short answer

Most homeowners land somewhere in these ranges for a full Fort Worth roof replacement, tear-off included:

Home sizeArchitectural shingleClass 4 impact resistant
1,500 sq ft$9,500 – $15,000$12,000 – $19,000
2,000 sq ft$12,500 – $19,500$15,500 – $24,000
2,500 sq ft$15,000 – $24,000$19,000 – $30,000
3,000+ sq ft$18,000 – $30,000+$23,000 – $38,000+

Wide ranges, and that is deliberate. A simple gable roof on a one-story ranch and a cut-up two-story with four valleys, three dormers and a chimney are not the same job, even at identical square footage.

These are market ranges, not a quote. The only number that means anything is the one written after somebody has been on your roof.

What actually moves the number

Pitch and access

Anything over a 7/12 pitch means harnesses, roof jacks and slower work. Steep roofs cost more because they take longer and carry more risk. A roof a crew can walk comfortably goes down faster than one they have to climb.

How many layers are up there

Texas allows two layers of shingles in most cases. If you have two, both come off, and that is double the tear-off labor and double the dump weight.

Penetrations and detail work

Every pipe boot, vent, skylight and chimney is a place water can get in, and each one takes hands-on flashing work. A roof with twelve penetrations costs more than the same square footage with four.

Decking condition

This is the one nobody budgets for, and it is worth its own section.

The line item nobody plans for: decking

Deteriorated roof decking with gaps between plank sheathing exposed during a Fort Worth, TX roof replacementOriginal plank decking on a west Fort Worth home, with gaps wide enough to see through. Multiple re-roofs had destroyed the nailing surface.

Your decking is the wood layer between your rafters and everything else. Nobody sees it until the shingles come off.

In older Fort Worth neighborhoods, plenty of homes still have original 1×6 plank decking rather than plywood or OSB. Plank decking sheds water fine for decades. The problem is nails. Every re-roof drives a fresh set of nails into the same boards, and eventually the wood is so perforated it will not hold a nail at code.

Here is what we look for once a roof is stripped:

  • Boards that flex or crack under weight
  • Gaps wider than an eighth of an inch between planks
  • Delaminating OSB, usually near valleys or eaves where water has sat
  • Dark staining, which means moisture has been getting through for a while
  • Old nail holes so dense the wood has nothing left to grip

Replacement decking usually runs $70 to $120 per sheet installed. On a whole-house redeck that adds up quickly, which is exactly why it matters that it gets documented correctly for your claim rather than absorbed quietly or skipped.

Skipping it is worse. Shingles fastened to bad decking will not hold in a North Texas windstorm, and most manufacturer warranties are void if the deck did not meet spec at install.

Shingle options and what they mean for the price

In hail country, Class 4 is worth a hard look. Owens Corning and most major manufacturers make one, and many Texas carriers offer a premium discount for having it. Ask your agent what yours would be before you decide.

One thing we will not do is downgrade you. If we pull off a Class 4 shingle over a thermal barrier underlayment, you get Class 4 over a thermal barrier back. We supplement the claim for the correct material rather than putting cheaper material on your house and pocketing the difference.

How insurance changes the math

Most of the time a Fort Worth roof replacement is a hail or wind claim, not an out-of-pocket purchase. Your real cost is usually your deductible.

Usually. Not always.

We worked with a homeowner in Fort Worth whose carrier approved only one slope. They had already pushed back the closing date on their house sale because of the roof, and they could not afford another two weeks arguing about the other side. They paid the difference themselves to keep the sale together.

That is the part worth learning from. A partial approval is not automatically the final answer, but fighting one takes time. If you are under a deadline, start the claim early and get a roofer in the attic and on the roof before the adjuster shows up, not after.

A few things that consistently help:

  • Document the date of loss. The NOAA storm events database can confirm what hit your ZIP and when.
  • Photograph everything before any repair, including soft metals like gutters, vents and screens.
  • Have your roofer present for the adjuster meeting.
  • Know your rights. The Texas Department of Insurance publishes what carriers owe you and how to dispute.

If a claim was denied or underpaid, that is not always the end of it. We have had denials reopened and paid in full once the damage was documented properly. See our insurance claim resources for how that process works.

Repair or replace?

Not every roof needs replacing. Repair usually makes sense when:

  • The roof is under 12 years old
  • Damage is limited to one slope or a few penetrations
  • You can still get matching shingles
  • The decking underneath is sound

Replacement is the better call when the roof is past 15 years, damage spans multiple slopes, granule loss is widespread, or the decking is failing. If you are unsure, our roof repair page walks through the difference, and a free inspection will settle it in about forty-five minutes.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a roof replacement take in Fort Worth?

Most homes are one day. Larger or steeper roofs, and any job needing a full redeck, run two to three days. Weather moves things more than anything else.

Will my insurance cover a full roof replacement?

If the damage is from a covered event like hail or wind and it is widespread enough, usually yes. Carriers sometimes approve only part of a roof. That decision can be challenged with proper documentation.

Does replacing decking add much to the cost?

It can. Budget $70 to $120 per sheet installed. On a full redeck that is a meaningful line item, which is why it needs to be identified and documented rather than discovered halfway through and argued about later.

Are Class 4 shingles worth the extra money in North Texas?

For most Fort Worth homeowners, yes. Between the hail performance and the insurance discount many Texas carriers offer, the premium often pays for itself over the life of the roof.

Do I need a permit to replace a roof in Fort Worth?

Yes. The City of Fort Worth requires a permit for roof replacement. We pull it as part of the job.

What if my claim was denied?

Get a second opinion before you accept it. Denials get reversed when damage is documented correctly. It happens more often than people expect.
