What a Good Roof Dryer Vent Requires

The duct should follow the appliance manufacturer’s instructions and applicable building requirements. In general, it should be smooth metal, properly supported, and routed as directly as practical. The roof cap should open freely while keeping rain and animals out. Screens that trap lint can create restrictions and are generally inappropriate on dryer exhaust outlets.

The roof penetration also needs correct flashing. Smearing sealant around a poorly installed cap is not a durable roofing repair. The flashing must work with the shingle system so water sheds around the opening.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Clean the lint screen after every load and inspect the accessible connection behind the dryer. The full duct should be cleaned on a regular schedule based on its length, use, and the manufacturer’s guidance. A qualified dryer-vent or HVAC professional can handle the duct cleaning. A roofer should inspect the roof cap, flashing, shingles, and decking around the penetration.
