Asphalt Shingles and Your Roof–You Have Options

While there are several types of roofing shingles, some shingle types stick out as preferable to the others. As roofing is one of the more costly upgrades for your home, you will want to make sure your roof is going to last for many years.

Which shingle type is the best?

Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles are by far the most common type of roofing material. And, for a good reason. Being made of fiberglass, these shingles are durable while remaining budget conscience. These shingles meet the needs of most residential customers.

·What are the different types of asphalt shingles?

There are 3 main types of asphalt shingles.

1.3-tab shingles.

This is the most affordable type of asphalt shingles. Under the proper conditions, these can last over 20 years. That does mean regular upkeep, including care and maintenance. And, of course, a yearly inspection by a qualified roofing contractor.

2.Dimensional shingles.

These shingles are more durable than the 3-tab shingles. However, they are also more costly. Your upfront cost will be higher, but if you plan to be in your home for more than 30 years, the investment will be well worth it. These shingles are often warranted for 30 years to life, depending on the shingle and installation. Part of the reason these are more durable is they are multi-layered. They are fast becoming the most common type of shingle. Dimensional shingles come in a variety of colors to increase the aesthetics of your home.

3.Premium shingles, also known as luxury asphalt shingles.

By the words premium and luxury, you can probably guess that this is the most expensive type of asphalt shingle. These shingles are also multi-layered. They are, by far, the most durable type of asphalt shingle. Much of the appeal is the aesthetic appeal. These shingles are designed to replicate the appearance of slate, shake, and cedar roofs. Great for period homes, these shingles are higher-end than either 3-tab or dimensional shingles.
